On a visit to my Uncle Rick and Aunt Karen’s, we have found ourselves attending memorial services…

Though to a Doctor of English
these rhymes may be drivel
Karen has always inspired me
and spared me literary snivel

When I blasted an e-mail
about living in a red state
Karen’s was the first response
because she could commiserate

I looked up to Aunt Karen
over so many years
as a woman of independence
with the courage to face her fears

She has a keen sense of humor
and an intelligent wit
not scared to point out
when the village has an idiot

I love my Aunt Karen
and I really do miss her
I was hoping that on this visit
I would get to hug and kiss her

But instead I’m hearing stories
more than I ever did know
seems funny that we wait
until it is time to go

If there was one message
I thought Aunt Karen was giving
It would be to seize the day
because life is for living

My favorite prayer is “Help”
I often ask more specifically
with “Help me to see this differently”
and then I am reminded
about where I was amiss
Surely instead of conflict
I can see Peace instead of this…

For the one who likes to argue…

Do not cloud our light
with your need to be right
just an ego retreat
For there is no defeat
nothing to lose or to win
only error and not sin
Again we will choose
and we will not refuse
to see Peace over illusion
I forgive this intrusion
and recognize that we are One
what is Whole can not be undone

ORDER A POEM

Years ago, when I began my custom poetry business, someone asked me why I write poetry.  So, to get the answer, I wrote this poem.

I never really asked the question
it’s something I just do
not understanding it myself
I’m hoping this gives me an answer too

Well, there are some reasons;
to gain a greater understanding
a sorting of solutions
when problems are so demanding

I may also quest for clarity
and reveal my thoughts to you
which are not simply shown
with a simple how do you do

I guess its also dam control
when emotions are eruptive
I need not spew out lava
these rhymes are less destructive

Poetry brings a connection
to something greater than me
whether for my own expression
or entertainment at a party

The rhythm so simple and calming
soft and sweet like a lullaby
no matter if the topic alarming
or if the pain so harsh I must cry

The words are like a security blanket
that help me to continue
whatever my perspective is
my poems will always ring true

realizing this divine expression
of words that bring such peace
I now make this my profession
so that the rhymes will soon increase

We hoped for change
and now it is here
a new administration
to begin this new year
will our energies shift
to love from fear?
Will the belief in suffering
come to an end?
will we stop naming enemies
and call others friend?
Most of us voted for it
the change we desire
we elected a leader
someone we can admire
but can we count on one man
to make our purpose higher?
Is it really up to another
to set our souls on fire?
I’m feeling somehow accountable
as this New Year I prepare to enter
I do believe in this President
He can be a confident mentor
Yet we are ALL a part of
the One that is the Center
and each and every one of us
can be the Truth presenter
It’s not about searching for a future
or analyzing where we have been
It is about remembering who we are
and connecting to our Spirit within

I just learned that my friend Kim writes poetry, and she agreed to share this poem about her cats…

They were my companions who died and I felt their sudden flight
One night my friend and I took a stroll
right up the street we call skid row
up the road I saw an angelic light
I said “Oh, Nora, what a beautiful sight!”
Them angels I do see, Miko, Panther, watching over me

Sometimes I wonder with all my might, what I shall see tonight
In my dreams I see two cats, whoa gotta watch my back
One night I took a midnight stroll, with the monlight back in tow
An angelic light I do see, Miko, Panther watching over me

In my humble ways should appear, it’s a beautiful sight and I have no fear
as I walk the streets near my home, with them up above I’m never alone
Gray Wolfee is now free, Him, Miko, Panther watching over me
What a sight this night, I knew when I saw the light
So many times we spent together, I know Graywolf will be with me forever and ever
That’s the way the angelic lights are to be, Miko, Panther, Graywolf watching over me

Today I had the opportunity to have a Mary Kay Makeover, compliments of my friend Joanne Sauter.  I tend to resist anything that may require more effort on my part (just wearing make-up), but the process was so fun and simple that I purchased my own “starter” kit.  The basics were surprisingly inexpensive and what is more amazing is that I will actually use it!  My delightful friend Celeste joined me and was also made over, in the Classic Look.  My look is Minimalist, as you can see in this photo.  I am in green and Celeste is in pink.

Here are the musings of a professional poet playing on the words of her business name. Is there something to the addition of just a few letters that expand the meaning of a word, add an extra syllable to a rhythm, create a new and different rhyme or completely transform the meaning of a poem? Certainly. Personality is personal. Verse is part of Universe, yet these words expand far beyond their definition alone…

Is my personality expressed
through the rhythm and the rhyme?
Are the personal things addressed
in the poetic beating of time?

Am I merely playing with form?
A silly sort of game
Exploration beyond the norm
past identity with a name

Yet with every verse I make
and although it is very personal

Well, that’s all fine and good, for me, a poet, but what about you? You are also a poet, you simply have not acknowledged this yet. Want to find out? Just write. Spill it with ink onto paper or fingertips on the key board. Tell your critic to take some time off and express yourself. The only preparation is to get quiet for just a moment, tap into what your heart wants to express and let it flow. Don’t worry about form, don’t worry about rhyme, forget all the things you ever knew about poetry (I do). Let it flow.

Now read it, noticing the places where you may have paused to “think” about what you were writing, rather than letting in flow. These will be the spots where your reading will “come up short”, hesitate, feel abrupt. Now, paying attention to what you have said rather than how you said it- do you feel satisfied with what has been expressed?

Your choice from here is easy. Either continue to write, until you have a flow that feels comfortable and easy, or just go to www.personalizedpoems.org , copy what you have written in to the order page and buy a poem with the content that you created.
