Here is a poem that I wrote in answer to the question “Why do you write poems?”

I never really asked the question
It’s something I just do
not understanding it myself
I’m hoping this gives me an answer too

Well, there are some reasons-
to gain a greater understanding
a sorting of solutions
when problems are so demanding

I may also quest for clarity
and reveal my thoughts to you
which are not simply shown
with a simple “How do you do”

I guess it is also dam control
when emotions are eruptive
I need not spew out lava
these rhymes are less destructive

Poetry brings a connection
to something greater than me
whether for my own expression
or entertainment at a party

They rhythm so simple and calming
soft and sweet like a lulliby
no matter if the topic alarming
or if the pain so harsh I must cry

The words are like a security blanket
that help me to continue
whatever my perspective is
my poems will always ring true

Realizing this Divine expression
of words that bring such peace
I now make this my profession
so that the rhymes will surely increase

Strives Born of Struggles

As a baby we crawled for miles
Before we learned to walk
We mumbled incoherently
Before we learned to talk
I believe God gave us these struggles
So we would understand
That life’s not easy for babies
And it’s even harder as a man
You see, if we never struggled
Then we would never grow
If you don’t take the time to learn
Then you’ll never ever know
It took me many years
Before I could clearly see
The simplicity and the genius
Combined in God’s plan for me
For how could I appreciate
The joys God has sent my way
If it wasn’t for the pains
I survived from day to day
Without knowing both
How could I compare
How could I understand
If I had not been here
I couldn’t appreciate the struggle
If I never had to fight
If it hadn’t been for darkness
I would never have known the glory of the light
That’s why I am grateful for my trials
For my tears, and for my pain
For they taught me appreciation, gave me wisdom
Both of which are eternal gains

ORDER A POEM from Personal Verse

I had the opportunity to be the presenter at the monthly UWABC meeting in Salt Lake City, UT.  I decided to use the presentation time to co-create a poem.  First, I gathered information from those in attendance according to the order form.  Next, I wrote a poem using the expressions from the group while attendees did their 60 second sound bytes.  Then I read the poem back to the group.  Here is a quick description of the UWABC and the poem we co-created at the August 2009 Networking Breakfast.

The Utah Women’s Alliance for Building Community (UWABC) acts as an umbrella organization connecting people from diverse occupations, professions, and organizations to share business interests, build relationships and influence positive community change.

At the UWABC Networking Breakfast
we come to realize our common interests
We are an eclectic mix of powerful women
and lest we forget a few great men
You can meet new people outside your career
and learn to get past that public speaking fear
We are given a morning filled with inspiration
for such accomplished folks we have high admiration
You can sample from others and gain a new notion
for your business growth it is a majic potion
Like the spokes of a wheel here we are connected
and out from this hub our community is affected
For volunteer efforts we are the first to cheer
and we give out awards in October each year
A small starting business is nurtured and showered
and we all get to see how the garden is flowered
When your cup is empty you can come get your fill
where the food is good and the parking essential
It’s a classy environment so open and inviting
and many presentations can be quite exciting
So when you go from here and see us around
remember this connection where new friends are found

ORDER A POEM

I fell deep into the hole in my soul
and darkness surrounded me,
permeated me,
engulfed me
I thought no light
I had no sight
It just was not right
for me to die
so I decided to try
to live again
even without any Peace
though I thought it elusive
and to certain exclusive
I continued to search in my sleep
until I gently woke up
and continued to look
for a Light that I knew to be within me
The center of my soul
that no other could control
but the One who created me
and then I asked Spirit
if I could just get near it
my only goal,
to find Peace without killing me
Twenty-four years had passed
before I was brought to the Vast-
The vastness of space and eternity
I was a body no more
complete connection I could explore
in total freedom
and intimate reality
I had been there before,
only this time I could clearly see
That All Light came from within me
It was not darkness engulfing
It was pinholes of light
all around me
what I thought was a pit
was certainly not it
but my Oneness with all in serenity
I had to return
with so much to learn
about Light
in The Pit
of Tranquility

We spent the weekend at Absolution Ranch
for some good ‘ol Western livin’
You don’t need a priest nor penance
to know that you are forgiven… 

Down in the Colorado Paradox Valley
Where God’s greatest gifts are displayed
with incredible views and tranquil gardens
a perfect combination of sunshine and shade

Though the property is fenced for horses
we blazed our own two legged trail
the ranch rambles on past its homestead
where even more breath taking scenes prevail 

Of course we went to the Bedrock Store
the last stop for “Thelma and Louise”
a place to purchase gas, sundries and such
or merely to go and shoot the breeze

We brought the dogs to the Delores river
a place where folks put in their rafts
Buddy and Sam chased sticks in the current
while Frodo Baggins gave us all a few laughs

While enjoying the scenery from the front porch
we listened to classic old western tunes
we had truly reached Absolution
in a couple of glorious ranch afternoons

and at night I stepped out the back door
to take a look up into the sky
I gasped at so many stars up above
and the coyotes voiced their reply

A quick climbing drive up to Buckeye Reservoir
Before making the journey back home
We are blessed to have seen such a place
where the ancestors and animals roam

My favorite prayer is “Help”
I often ask more specifically
with “Help me to see this differently”
and then I am reminded
about where I was amiss
Surely instead of conflict
I can see Peace instead of this…

For the one who likes to argue…

Do not cloud our light
with your need to be right
just an ego retreat
For there is no defeat
nothing to lose or to win
only error and not sin
Again we will choose
and we will not refuse
to see Peace over illusion
I forgive this intrusion
and recognize that we are One
what is Whole can not be undone

ORDER A POEM

What shall I post this week my love?
-How about an ode to Spring?
It’s all that I can think of
while the snow continues melting-
Ahh, spring a wonderful topic
the winter so quickly passed
though we are not yet tropic
with plenty of snow amassed
The days are lighter longer
and grasses are turning green
the streams are growing stonger
as we shift from winter’s scene
Yet springtime this year seems somewhat strange
Are April thoughts in March due to climate change?

 

In the light of my willingness
past hurts are difficult to recall
and in the Spirit of Forgiveness
the pain never occurred at all

Just twists of my perception
reactions to the guilt I feel
a memory of separation
that I once believed was real

I am willing now to look upon
all the darkened spots within my soul
for the shining Love of the release
from an imagined error as my goal

I seek now to see the Truth
instead of this, and this, and this-
I know there is no suffering
when I can recognize, God Is.

Garden of My Heart

Eyes close
world disappears.
I cross the threshold
into the garden of my heart.

The sweet perfume
beckons me to stay awhile
in the silent still fragrance
to relax in the gentle sway
of the universe.

I can rest here
bask in womb-like warmth
dance among the flowers
hear angels sing

be loved
be loving
be love
be
