This is a poem that my friend Sue shared with me. She has given me permission to share it with all of you.

Coming Home
I tugged the safety belt
one more time
pulling the parachute
as close to me
as my thoughts.

The plane left the ground
rising upward like a lost balloon.
my chest heaved
the constant thrum of the propeller
absorbed my attention.

The perfect altitude
came as quickly
as the sweat on my brow.
The pilot cut the engine
to a grave silence.
And I knew my time had come.

I stepped to the door,
eyes at full squint,
held my breath
thinking
it could be my last,
and jumped.

The chute opened first
and then my eyes.
Fully engulfed in blue air
I drifted down
to Mother Earth.
She was waiting with open arms.

When I arrived,
I knelt down,
kissed her dearly
and promised never
to leave home again.

For me, poetry has always been a way to gain access to “Truth”. This may be my own personal “truth”, the truth of the Universe, or simply a different perspective. All I know is, that by the time I reach the end of a poem, I feel better. I feel satisfied and fulfilled. I move out of a problem and into a solution. I express an emotion or feeling in a way that I was unable to communicate until the poem was written. I do this as often for myself as I do for others. It brings me great joy to use my own Self Expression to help others express their Self. Like the artist who paints a portrait, the photographer who captures the still shot or the novelist who tells the story, I am a poet who lives to verse. I encourage you to develop your own unique Self Expression, or at least enlist another to assist you in expressing your Self.

Ahh, to be a poet of the literary kind

using metaphor and simile to reveal my mind

but it leaves so many of us far behind

I prefer the simple, four-lined, rhymed

You may think this structure is worn

between deep and shallow, I am torn

do not look upon these words with scorn

to be a poet is for what I ‘ve been born

To all the critics I sneer “poo poo”

poetry is not to be judged, just something I do

I AM A POET I say to you

such a powerful statement can only be true

A poet by proxy, by right and not chance

I can make the rhythm and the rhymes dance

whatever the occasion or circumstance

personalizedpoems.org will surely advance

with this format I can use discretion

whether my own or another’s intention

to use the verse with a Spirit dimension

so go ahead, give me your “honorable mention”

because I know the poem that is the best

whether or not entered into a contest

the winning poem is the one that’s addressed

no matter the form or topic expressed

If you want to write a poem, just write it.

I believe there is a poet in all of us. Yet, we have this critic within us as well, not to mention all the critics out there, who can not allow us our poetic bliss. I believe that any form of expression is poetry. For me, it is tapping into my source- and when I’m tapped in, there is an effortless flow of rhythm and rhyme. The flow is interrupted when I try to direct it. I can not be dishonest in a poem. I say what needs to be said, and quite often, the greeting card rhyme softens the blow. Yet the truth is usually enlightening, uplifting, and joyous. It is difficult to leave a poem in a quandry, my pen must keep moving toward the solution. Most poems are of appreciation, celebration, and kind regards.

Well, that’s all fine and good, for me, a poet, but what about you? You are also a poet, you simply have not acknowledged this yet. Want to find out? Just write. Spill it with ink onto paper or fingertips on the key board. Tell your critic to take some time off and express yourself. The only preparation is to get quiet for just a moment, tap into what your heart wants to express and let it flow. Don’t worry about form, don’t worry about rhyme, forget all the things you ever knew about poetry (I do). Let it flow.

Now read it, noticing the places where you may have paused to “think” about what you were writing, rather than letting in flow. These will be the spots where your reading will “come up short”, hesitate, feel abrupt. Now, paying attention to what you have said rather than how you said it- do you feel satisfied with what has been expressed?

Your choice from here is easy. Either continue to write, until you have a flow that feels comfortable and easy, or just go to www.personalizedpoems.org , copy what you have written in to the order page and buy a poem with the content that you created. Either way, you are a poet. Author or co-author, you still wrote the work.
