This June I turn forty
Can this be for real?
Certain bodily evidence
is now hard to conceal…
but isn’t age determined
by the way that I feel?
A pinata I purchased
the prettiest I could find
because my true age
is a state in my mind
So it’s time to celebrate
with young hearts in kind
I bought favors and candy
and fun things to share
like my unicorn pinata
each one of us rare
and of the June birthdays
I’m the youngest one there!
So in Peoa this year
my husband and I host
as we raise our glasses
for a Birthday toast
I’ll say I’ve arrived
and have Forty to boast!

It is the little things that matter each day
the actions that express the love that we share
not so much in the words that we say
but what we do shows how much we care
Like you being up early and letting me sleep late
then quietly bringing me breakfast in bed
knowing when to stop once you get me to escalate
which allows me to speak with you calmly instead
Like when you come home to dinner on the table
or when I block the “air” from you under the covers
The sweet considerate things that keep our love stable
so much more intimate than simply being just lovers
Yet the most precious thing to secure our happily ever after
is when things get too serious we always break into laughter

Yours is a love that I cannot refuse
Pulling me back from the edge of a cliff
A beacon of light, for you are my muse
To free me from the darkness of my own tiff
Unearthed by my demons, coming out of the past
I become a ball of fire, a puddle of tears
I fall in a pit, black engulfing and vast
Your embrace tells me it is only my fears
But to me they are real, too big and strong

I had the honor to join some fantastic musicians last night who were kind enough to share their microphone with me at the local coffee shop. While there, I wrote and read this.  Now I’d like to share a wonderful evening with everyone…

Hanging out at Perks
listening to music live
and reading a poem or two
feeling glad to be alive
There are voices so melodic
with a banjo and mandolin
It’s no wonder that I smile
as my feet tap to the rhythm
Guitar songs so original
about cowgirls and snow
and my favorite piece
from that fiddle band I know
and a solo songwriter
sings of dawn and wedding days
you can actually feel the love
through the notes that he plays
to a sweet voiced guitar man
playing his classic picks
trading Elton’s piano
for some gentle guitar licks
and a young Kamas artist
belting out Dylan blues
and his own compositions
that Sundance films should choose
Yes I’m in good company
with musicians keeping time
helping me with my rhythm
and inspiring more rhyme

This poetic experience was inspired by a book by Trish Withus,
There Is Only Love

For the past eight years
my vote seemed inconsequential
especially in the elections
that were presidential

In the first one I had voted
among the nation’s majority
Yet America’s decision
was over-ruled by state authority

The second I was not sure of
being given lackluster choices
I felt insecure within myself
among so many other voices

But there was a glimmer of hope
when two years ago Congress shifted
my faith restored in those who vote
I was feeling quite uplifted

Yet now I am feeling anxious
as we approach another November
The real reason for my vote
is what I want to remember

I am an American
with my vote I show my pride
knowing that all by myself
such appointments I don’t decide

The outcome is not up to me
in this thought I find relief
It really does not matter
who is Commander in Chief

What matters is I voted
and that I have done my part
my decision based not on politics
but the promptings of my heart

Taking photos and making memories with friends and family is a staple of summertime.  Add to that special occasion, awesome vacation, family reunion or unplanned visit with a personalized poem.  Here are the memories shared by my husband Jim and his fellow “river rats” on a recent adventure on the Green River in Desolation Canyon.

River Rhythms

Through Desolation Canyon
which we simply call “Deso”
with the rhythms of the river
on the water we did flow                        

Jim a novice river rat
gave rough rapids a happy name
Fluffy Bunny Slipper Rapids
kept him in the paddling game

Art with his great good-humor
and his camping/boating expertise
met someone who lives a Day at a Time
and for that he was truly pleased

Kathy a true river lover
remembers a coyote friend
and enjoyed the hike to Rock Creek
watching the river below round the bend

Rina recalls big rapid days
and the buzzing of mosquitoes in her ear
sleeping under a full moon and shooting stars
and eating more brownies than she had all year

Sherie got to kayak again
and the animal stuff was her thrill
from the nesting birds called Vireos
to the fresh made cougar kill

Jake brought his youth and vigor
which was handy for heavy lifting
We all enjoyed his calm presence
like the river while we were drifting 

And bringing us all together, Dennis
our gratitude for him is beyond measure
for a fabulous Deso river trip
that we all will dearly treasure

It’s that time of year when we are jetting off to one place or another, perhaps to some trendy or exotic locale to attend a wedding.  Today weddings are not all put on by young couples starting out in need of all the “items” to fill a home and begin a life together.  Many weddings occur long after a couple has lived together.  Perhaps the wedding is a second marriage or occuring later in life thus bringing two entire households together.  The last thing the happy couple needs is more stuff!  Sure, a check or cash would be great, but feels so impersonal.  Personal Verse can provide the perfect wedding gift for new couples to be cherished for years to come.  Give them something special to overflow their already full hearts.  Give them your thoughts and feelings.  Give them the gift of personalized poetry.
