For My Valentine

Along with all the Valentine things
That this February Day brings
Though it may sound cliche
I just have to say
You are the wind beneath my wings

You give me the space to try
and you never ask me why
No matter how scary it seems
You encourage my dreams
and I soon realize that I can fly

Though while I’m soaring its grand
the time comes when I land
and settle into some nesting
and while I am resting
You simply understand

Not just on this special day
do I recognize you this way
so blessed to share our life
so honored to be your wife
There is only one thing more to say

That soon my heart’s desire
will allow you to retire
and do the things you please
It’s my turn to be the breeze
and watch you soar ever higher

I wrote this one for my brother-in-law and sister-in-law after my husband got a text from his brother that said now that both sons are going to college it is “killing us”.

Our house is not an empty nest
this dwelling is our home
extending love to our boys
wherever they may roam

and though our hearts are heavy
we are truly thrilled
seeing both sons off to college
our dreams are being fulfilled

Since before they were born
our lives were not our own
We are devoted to our children
unchanged now that they’re grown

So we’ll hold on to each other
adjust to the day to day
rekindle our life long romance
and find more time to play

And when we’re longing for our sons
and our emotions have us perplexed
we’ll just pick up the phone
or type out a quick text!

My husband Jim and I are beginning to celebrate our 10th anniversary this weekend.  I thought it would be nice to start off with some Personal Verse.  Feel free to use this poem and maybe change a few words to give it to your spouse, family member, friend or any relationship that you cherish.

When I gaze lovingly upon you
I am able to see God’s perfection
and as I learn to do this with others
I become brighter with each reflection

For this is a Holy Relationship
one in which we blossom and grow
supporting each other’s decisions
and the path each chooses to follow

Most times we travel together
and quite often venture out on our own
resting in our heartfelt connection
and the love that is so deeply known

Though in moments we struggle with ego
and criticize, whine or complain
one of us usually chooses to see Peace
and once more our minds become sane

A sense of humor, oh so essential
we’ve known far more laughter than tears
A joyous bond that has held us so close
during a wonderful marriage of ten years!
