With such fond memories of childhood
It’s hard to know where to start
but for each and every happy one
You certainly have been a part…

From the time when I was a little girl
and danced on top of your shoes
to the times when I was growing up
and you made me less confused

Like when we were skiing together
and a teenage boy on the chairlift was bold
he had the nerve to put his arm around me
even after I told him I was ten years old!

I threatened his life and told his friends
and complained to you all the way home
You listened calmly, an occasional chuckle
and then you made your feelings known

You reached your hand accross to me
and said, “Don’t you worry Jay,”
“Just do the same with all the boys
and you’ll be better than okay.”

Your advice to me so honest and true
and never was it prolific
from “Don’t lose your independence”
to “I think that Jim is TERRIFIC!”

Thanks not only for being there
but also for being my friend
for sharing with me your leisure time
not the usual father/daughter trend

You’re so much more than a “good father”
going far beyond what is obligatory
You participate in our lives
and truly enjoy our company

And I get to relive my memories
of growing up all over again
as I share with you in love and joy
as you spend time with your grandchildren

My Gardener

The gift of life can only be given by two
one is my father, and the other is you.
The times that are cherished and what we learn from each other
makes life a bit easier with you as my mother.
Indeed I had started as a seed, a part of a flower
I soaked up the sun and felt many a shower.
You as my gardener, you kept the soil soft
always bringing the sun in, no matter what the cost
and when there was less water and more pain
you took nature’s place and brought on the rain
The gardener doing her duty for the love of the seed
will be caring and giving, but firm. These traits she will need
Help the seed to grow, the gardener does year after year
Finally the blossom brings joy, or perhaps a tear
The gardener has experiences as the seed begins to grow
Sometimes we grow too fast, or even a bit too slow
But with you as my gardener, I have no need to worry
Life is too short to be lived in a hurry
Finally the time will come when the seed is fully grown
like a child will, the flower has blossomed and will face life on its own
I know that with you as my gardener I have much more to learn
I promise I will make you proud, a beautiful blossom you shall earn
And the garden goes on with a gardener tending the soil
Sometimes the gardener fails, and the plants may spoil
but you have not done this; you take care of your seeds
you keep in the sunshine and get rid of the weeds
Yes, I am a lucky flower with you as my gardener
You have helped me to grow, none would have tried harder
I am a very lucky person to have you for a mother
Thank-you, my gardener, I wouldn’t have chosen any other.

Valentine Verse | Winter Wooing

Since poetry is personal, I don’t know if there is “good and bad” poetry. There’s just custom poetry. Poetry with interrupted flow (stalled rhythm, contrived expression) may be considered bad. Yet, how do we know that it is not the format which the poet intended? Perhaps the poet is using these techniques with certainty and skill. I believe that poetic “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

A poem, like any work of art, is subject to as many interpretations as there are readers. It is merely a matter of perception. The only bad poem is the one that remains unwritten. Whether the poet expresses a single thought, a myriad of metaphor, or an onslaught of symbolism, it is, as they say “all good”.

Poetry is personal, and need only be expressed. I prefer an easy rhythm and a snappy rhyme. I often border on lymeric, and I also like to list elements. Yet whatever form I choose, the important thing is that the ideas are expressed somehow, not trapped on some hamster wheel in my brain.
