Awhile ago a woman named Cathy McClanahan called me to share that she likes to verse just like me!  She has a business making custom made greetings cards, including her original verse.  We decided to play a game and verse back and forth to each other.  I have her permission to share what we have “so far”.  My words are in black and Cathy’s are in pink.

I got a call from this woman
all the way from Tennessee
She said that she makes cards
with verses just like me.

So we’re forming an alliance
in which we each will play our part,
to create a “first” in history
co-written from our hearts.

two poets who love to verse
and share with others a gift
not a dark, contemplative poem
but some words that will uplift.

For any given situation
For anyone who’s special to you,
We will create a custom greeting
Like Hallmark could never do!

It’s funny you would say that
I compare myself to Hallmark
But our direct, personal touch
gives our verse an added spark-

If you met down by the river,
Or were attracted by his silly grin,
As soon as he reads the verse,
He will know it’s meant just for him!

You can talk about the things
that only you will understand
not like a store bought card
or an expression that is canned.

Let someone know they’re “special”
Thank another for being “kind”,
insert a cute little nickname.
you can totally blow their mind!

Whether you are the best man
or perhaps the frantic bride
you get to edit the work
on the final draft you decide

I had posted a poem to my brother a couple of weeks ago, and it has disappeared into cyber space.  Luckily, I still have my hand-written version of it, so here it is again.

Ode to my Bro

He claims I’ve never written him one
so this poem is for my brother
Mom said when no one is left in the world
all we would have is each other

Though that was often said to us
when we fought as siblings often do
I guess the bond of brother and sister
can somehow make that statement true

We are each our only sibling
and I enjoy the rank of younger female
The benefits of having a big brother
are more than these words entail

Growing up we were confidantes
figuring out what Mom and Dad would say
I would often go to my brother first
and still can to this very day

I had my own personal coach
not only in athletics, but also in life
and he would always stick up for me
even if I am the source of my own strife

A caring protective older brother
who allowed me to often tag along
He taught me that I could do for myself
and to keep my spirit going strong

and though he likes to taunt and tease
I know he thinks the world of me
Always ready to give me his best advice
between us there is no rivalry

The most wondrous thing I can say about him,
the best (and only) brother I ever had
is I get to see him interact with his children
He is even better as a Dad

Thank you bro- for everything
you’ve been my coach, my confidante and friend
I’d go on and on as I’ve said before
but this poem must have an end.

I love you Johnny!

Personal Poem | Northwest Adventure

Into the truck
with camper in tow
to the North and West
for two weeks we’ll go
Not much planned
except to arrive at a peak
known as Mt Ranier
a destiny to seek
abnormal weather
sweating in the nineties
I begin to question
my wardrobe priorities
Then glorious weather
with Ranier in full view
now that we’ve seen it
what else do we do?
Out to the coast
though the weather not good
I get a new jacket
with insulation and a hood
Cape Disappointment
though the name is real
only the weather
had that namesake feel
Yet the clouds broke up
as we left the coast
off to Mt St Helen’s
and her eruptive ghosts
Yet Astoria called us
the famed Columbia Bar
no, not for libations
but grand ships from afar
Now to the volcano
with a better forecast
overwhelmed by the views
and the destruction so vast
Just a small volcano
still blowing some steam
it seems like the 80s
were part of a dream
and onto Portland
for a couple of days
just wanting some sunshine
at least a couple of rays
Because on our way back
we’ll be passing Mt Hood
and we want to see it
the best that we could
I guess we’ll settle
for the super waterfall
pouring past a bridge
it was over 500 feet tall

Time to head home
and I don’t want to complain
but we’re going Southeast
and out of this rain!
A last day of respite
at our favorite Hot Springs
enjoying the daylight
that a big sky brings
It could be raining or snowing
but where ever we may roam
we love the Utah weather
and this place we call home
